  1. Love the video…but DUDE…when we are talking about guitars with a distinctive sound and illustrious history…you can’t leave out Rickenbacker. So many iconic players played Ricks for their distinctive sound…One particular model named after one of the famous musicians of all time. No other guitar (especially) coupled with the Vox AC30 produced/produces that distinctive (yeah I said it again) Rick jangly chime. No other guitars were, nor use today the low gain (now high gain) Toasters PUs. The 12 string version was responsible for the ultimate jangle from songs we all know and still play. Not to mention they are simply gorgeous to look at. I also know that no other Guitar or guitar company has been so divisive amongst guitar players. I bought my Rick for the very reason most buy them…because of the their distinct🤦‍♂ sound….and because a lot of the songs I like to play. You cannot even come close to getting the Rickenbacker sound on any other guitar. I have Two Ricks: a 1965 365OS Double Bound Midnight Blue, but I swapped out the low gain for Rickysound high gain toasters…and a beautiful 620JG. I also have a Tele and Reverend Charger HB for the individual sounds they produce…and I play them a lot…but there is not a day I don’t pick up one of my Ricks. Paul Paul Paul…how could you leave out Rickenbacker….it has a significant timeline of it’s own…and there have been very few changes to the models over the years, for a reason. Reverb has a great video on their site of iconic songs played on Ricks..it’s a fun video.

  2. Les Paul’s endorsement had already ran out with Gibson when he wanted his name off the guitar. Yes Les did prefer the traditional LP verses what we know today as the SG.

  3. Though a generally excellent history of guitar and pickup designs, you really should have shown a Danelectro with its Lipstick pickups as that was a totally unique design and sound (I love mine!)

  4. I think you need to first classify guitars by pickups.

And then by the location of the pickup, including the 24th fret neck guitar which has a pickup moved toward the bridge a bit.

    And that’s it.

A lot of people see lots of different types of guitars with different shapes and colors and they think that they sound different and they don’t.

The telecaster neck pickup uses 43 gauge wire which is different than the 44 on most vintage single coils.

Fender humbucker guitars sound brighter than Les Paul because the humbucker is often moved away from the neck like it is in the SG.

Lastly, there’s the issue of the materials of the guitar. It is possible to classify guitars according to their individual materials, but so far there’s been very little scientific testing done to determine what contributes what to what tone. But there are some journals out there and I would encourage everyone to look at those. And also the frequency graphs from Guitar nuts 2.

  5. IMHO: …IT’S TOO BAD THAT FENDER GUITARS, WITH MAPLE FRETBOARDS, ALL START TO LOOK LIKE CRAP, WHEN THE VARNISH WEARS OFF!!!…

  6. It bothers me that you completely dismissed the Fender Stratocaster Tremolo system, which was and still is light years ahead of every other tremolo that came out at the time, and is the exact formula used for the Floyd Rose tremolos today, minus the locking nut. When you showed the Fender tremolo you said (in a dismissive tone) it’s what Bigsby did 2 years earlier, when it’s not, it’s a completely different design with different mechanics to achieve the same purpose, and allowing you to do a lot more. When you showed the Gibson trem you said it’s Gibson’s take on the Bigsby and Fender tremolos, which are completely different. It’s Gibson’s take on the Bigsby tremolo, it’s based on that and resembles it very closely. The Fender tremolo is nothing like the Bigsby or the Gibson tremolo, both in function and freedom.

Somebody show me a divebomb on a Bigsby. Or a Gibson trem for that matter. I’m waiting…

  7. I wasn’t aware that these designs originated from the 50’s… it’s amazing how well preserved they have remained!

  8. I owned a mid 70’s Les Paul Custom. WAY WAY too heavy, nothing special really. Ended up giving it to my son. Main problem with Gibson is they are overpriced and the quality is no better than other top brands. I now use Fenders. I own a Surf Green ’88 Strat Plus and a blonde ’52 Tele. The tele can do ALL genres as can the Strat but just a bit better. If I had to buy one more guitar I’d go for a PRS. I also have a ’95 Candy Apple Red P Bass.

  9. I like the sound from the Gretsch guitar compared to Gibson and Fender. But Ibanez RG sounds as good, if not better than the Gretsch guitar you played.

  10. PRS’s contribution to the guitar is often under stated … He came in at a time when both big players were putting out what amounts to Junk and took the guitar building trade to a whole new level of craftsmanship..

  11. The first guitar you show is a Gibson ES125TDC. Looks like an early one (1960, "61) I had that exact model with the black pickup covers and dark sunburst just like that one.

  12. as he was explaining and playing the fender telly he didn’t change the pickup switch when he said "and this is the lovely round and creamy neck pickup". the switch was in the mid position. not tryna be that guy but ya gotta use the switch man

  13. This video was my way to find my favourite guitar. I didn’t know about the Mustang, knowing that name, i Found a Mustang, new, for the price of 526€. It’s now my soulmate. He/she always knows how to handle my sound

  14. Time for a correction, thoughts & addition comment!
    1) The guitar shown at 18:42 is the Ibanez PIA, not the JEM. The guitars shown at 14:04 are obviously Mustangs!
    2) Now I’d like to address a some comments saying I missed some models/brands. The idea behind this video is to zoom in on the most known models sold today. And what perspective is better than a history timeline? This gives the models I’m talking about a place in history. This timeline had to start somewhere and my choice was the first successful solid body guitar on the market: the Tele (Broadcaster).
Yes, Rickenbacker was massively important. Yes, Steinberger was highly innovative. Yes, headless guitars are very much a thing. 7/8 strings guitars are popular today!
Anyway, that just leaves room for more future videos, right?! 🎸Cheers and thanks for watching!
