  1. Get a good P bass and go from there. Grow up. Get a job. Make some money. Then buy several to cover the all the sounds. Worked for me.

  2. My first was an Aria Pro-2 5 string because I liked the colour… it was a long, long, time ago, but probably advise a new player to stick to 4 as most of the tab out there is for 4 and the bottom B just ends up being a thumb rest much of the time.
Thing you missed: don’t buy an acoustic bass thinking it will be kinder to the neighbours (which it is), why? Because its niche, very niche, and you won’t want to be niched.
Never sell a bass you own, it will always haunt you like a lost but never forgotten girlfriend. Every bass like every girl has something special; if you find a good multipurpose workhorse invest in it, but don’t let it break your heart remember unless its a one off custom you can always get a replacement – eventually, which kind of wrecks the analogy. Please before you reply note the same is true of boyfriends etc. regardless of any gender concerns.

  3. Try the Fender Player Series Jaguar bass. I thought I wanted a P bass but when I tried one in the store I found the neck to be too massive. The Jaguar can sound like a P bass but with a nice jazz type neck. And it’s passive.

  4. My favorite bass was a thunderbird goth. Best sound and i looked cool. Dont be scared away from it but the neck wait got me. Push through. Great ax. Plain ol jackson 500 dollar active now

  5. You try to keep balance while waisting energy with your arms and ass. That does not help the explanation- only shows the level of kif (ger -eng)

  6. Dont take advice from someone who thinks thunderbird is heavy or that it sounds good

End game if you want to play the percieved "meta" is a 6 string 37 inch scale b string bass, multiscaled/fannedfret

Electronics always upgradeable, dingwall ng3 5 or 6 string being most popular

Its not about style, ergonomics is universal, if you dont notice the difference youre not "at that level"

6 string is easier to play than 4 or 5 string, less sliding up and down,

If you complain about the weight, it means youre a weak body. Go ruck sacking you need to carry a heavy pack, workout, go climbing, go cycling

The bass isnt too heavy, 6 string basses are like 10 pounds, youre just kinda weak

  7. Just starting out, and not sure if you’ll stay with it? Cheap used Squier Affinity Bronco or Precision. About $120.00

  8. Thanks for the Thunderbird reference. Another bass player informed me that I shouldn’t buy a Thunderbird for my first bass due to weight issues. I didn’t even try one when I was shopping and purchased a Ray34 instead. Even though the Ray is an excellent bass that I will hand on to, it makes my mouth water every time I see a Thunderbird. It will definitely be my next bass.

  9. Short scale vs long scale should be considered. I’ve got a Mustang Performer and I love it! If I were going to purchase a long scale bass, it might be an American Performer P/J bass if the neck worked for me. Otherwise, it might be the American Performer J bass. I played a Guild back in the 80s and it was heavy. As an older musician, I prefer lighter instruments these days. Good coverage of this topic!

  10. "So what style of bass should you go for?" gets changed to "….. style of beer" in the captions. 😊 Yep. Cool. PS: My Oz accent is WAY harder to understand than yours btw …… πŸ‘

  11. I have a question Im wanting to pick up electric bass and this is a stupid question but I was wondering if your bass can be different colours like for example pink or something

Im a violinst and Im used to people highly against coloured instruments because it messes with the sound quality I was wondering if it’s the same case here

    Thx!!

  12. MY MOTTO Δ°S : NEVER BUY ANY KIND OF INSTRUMENT BEFORE TRYING AND PLAYING, INCLUDING ELECTRIC BASSES, NO MATTER WHAT THE BRAND IS….

  13. I got 5 idols Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, Duff McKagan, Slash and Kirk Hammett. They play different guitars but I’m definitely stuck between Duff and Kirks.

  14. My favorite bass, is the one that bass player doesn’t have to stop 5min in and say… "My battery is dead. I don’t have another one".

  15. Funny I’ve been playing guitar for over 30 years, always wanted a Bass , just never bought one. Weird thing was I noticed what all my favorite Bass players were using was all the same Bass. So I just happened to come across one at the local music store, a Spector bass, just the entry-level one Spector performer 4. Absolutely awesome, not disappointed at all, and exactly what I wanted in the playability and sound. Fabulous Bass!

  16. P-Bass seemed like the most common starting place for people, so I bought a used combo deal for a Fender Squier and can’t complain. But then I also wanted to try a short scale and I’m a fan of Royal Blood, so I bought a Gretsch. Really, only thing now is if I buy another amp.
What matters is I need to play either one as much as possible, otherwise it’s just sculpture decorating the man cave.

  17. I know the joke is that bassists are just failed guitarists. Well just hold a bass and you realize it is probably that guitarists are just guys that intimidated by the awesomess of the bass. 😏

  18. Having played bass for 50 years I would never suggest a beginner to buy a precision bass. They are not the most pleasant neck contour. Instead I would recommend an Ibanez, there necks are slim , easy to play with exceptional comfort. Once you become more proficient and learn how a bass is made, then check out lots of other basses to suit your hands and style you wish to pursue. Please bare in mind no one bass does it all.
